Calif. Chiropractor Goes on Trial in Fraud Case

A Central Valley, California chiropractor went on trial Tuesday, facing allegations of insurance fraud and the illegal use of drugs on patients.

Wilmer Origel, 48, is accused of overbilling insurance companies more than $1 million and putting patients under anesthesia, something prosecutors say he is not able to do legally. He could spend time in state prison if convicted.

Until his arrest three years ago, Origel of Modesto was in charge of Med-1 Medical Centers, a chain of Central Valley offices.

Origel faces 11 felony charges for alleged money laundering and insurance and workers' compensation fraud. He's also charged with overseeing a controversial procedure known as manipulation under anesthetics. Under the procedure, patients for a short time are anesthetized to avoid painful adjustments.
