WESTERN NEWS ZONE......

California-based Employers Direct Insurance Co., a workers’ compensation insurer that sells directly to policyholders minus brokers, plans to cease writing new and renewed policies in California as of Aug. 1.

Noting the strain of increasing medical costs on the workers’ comp system, challenging price competition and the uncertainty regarding the sustainability of the 2003-2004 legislative reforms as a result of recent court decisions, the company indicated it will continue serving current policyholders.

The company, which filed for a nearly 34 percent pure premium rate increase two months ago to take effect today, is also licensed to do business in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Nevada, Oregon and Utah.

Employers Direct also announced that it would eliminate nearly three dozen positions at its company, primarily in Southern California.
