California Woman Gets 6 Years in University Arson Case

Briana Waters, 32, of Berkeley, California was sentenced on Thursday to six years in prison for her role in an ecoterror attack at the University of Washington seven years ago.

Waters, who was convicted of arson back in March, was an Evergreen State College student who served as a lookout when others set fire to the Center for Urban Horticulture in 2001 at the Seattle campus. The Earth Liberation Front claimed responsibility because it mistakenly thought a researcher was genetically modifying poplar trees. The FBI views the ELF as a domestic terrorist group.

Prosecutors had requested a 10-year-sentence for Waters, while her defense attorney, who said he will appeal the arson conviction, claimed she should serve less than two years.
