“These were fast-moving fires that forced the evacuation of several thousand people,” said Bill Adams, acting vice-president, Atlantic, Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). “Thankfully, there was no loss of life, but some people have lost their homes while others have suffered property damage.”
Homeowners’ and tenant insurance policies generally cover the costs of repairing homes and replacing damaged belongings in circumstances such as these. Some policies may cover the cost of temporary additional living expenses, such as hotel charges, if occupants have to vacate their premises due to damage; however we advise individuals to check with their insurance representatives as soon as possible to discuss the particulars.
“Insurers are here to help Nova Scotians recover from these tragedies, and we will provide the best possible services to those affected by the wildfires,” Adams added.
Homeowners and tenants should note that their insurance policies may cover food spoilage due to power outages resulting from the fire. Once again, however, we advise homeowners to check with their insurance representatives for more information.
Policyholders affected by the fire are encouraged to contact their insurance representatives for specific information about their own policies, but can access general information by calling IBC’s Consumer Information Centre at 1-800-565-7189 Ext. 227.
