California Motel Sweep Leads to Work Comp Fines

Officials with the State Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (Labor Commissioner’s Office) issued 23 citations totaling $52,250 in fines to motels in 10 California counties as part of an ongoing effort to address noncompliance with workers’ compensation laws.

As part of the recent two-day enforcement sweep, state investigators collaborated with the El Dorado County District Attorney’s office to review workers’ comp insurance status of area motels to deepen the state’s attempts to reduce fraud.

Five investigators conducted the sweeps of 60 motels and inns located in Butte, Colusa, El Dorado, Glenn, Humboldt, Siskiyou, Shasta, Tehama, Yolo and Sacramento counties. Overall, 20 businesses were cited for failure to have workers’ comp insurance, and three businesses received citations for failing to provide itemized deductions to their employees.
