Wisconsin Bill Would Require Coverage for Autism

If passed, a bill currently in the Wisconsin Legislature would make it mandatory for insurance companies to cover autism.

The proposal under consideration now would make it law for insurance companies to provide coverage for the care and treatment of the 35,000 Wisconsin residents with autism, some of whom now must wait up to two years for state covered services.

A number of legislators are currently backing Gov. Jim Doyle in a proposed healthcare mandate to require insurers to cover autism treatment. Back in 2007, a similar bill went down to defeat.

Legislators backing the current bill say they hope to vote on it by the end of February.
