Pa. Couple Charged with Insurance Fraud
The Pennsylvania Attorney General's Insurance Fraud Section has filed criminal charges against a Luzerne County couple accused of submitting a false insurance claim totaling more than $137,000. Attorney General Tom Corbett identified the defendants as Elizabeth J. Joffe, 58, and her husband Peter T. Joffe, 48, both of Glen Lyon. Corbett said that the defendants fraudulently inflated the value of items found missing from their home in multiple claims with Allstate Insurance Company. According to court documents, the Joffes' were evicted from their property in White Haven, on March 21, 2005, following foreclosure proceedings. The criminal complaint states that on March 31, 2005, and again on April 12, 2005, the Joffes' filed reports with the Pennsylvania State Police alleging that after their eviction they discovered personal belongings missing from the property totaling approximately $4,000.00. The investigation also reportedly revealed that prior to their eviction, the Joffes' represented in court filings with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania that they had only approximately $7,500.00 in personal belongings. The Joffes' reportedly filed a claim with Allstate Insurance Company and on August 23, 2005, submitted a list of missing items to Allstate totaling more than $69,620.54. They then reportedly submitted a more extensive list on Dec. 5, 2005, totaling more than $136,928.56, not including many items marked as "unknown" or "priceless." Elizabeth and Peter Joffe are both charged with two counts of insurance fraud, one count of criminal attempt theft by deception, and one count of conspiracy. Each of these charges is a third-degree felony, carrying a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and a $15,000 fine.
