Tyress C. Pointer, 34, was arrested by Rochester police and state police following an investigation by the Insurance Department’s Frauds Bureau, the New York State Insurance Fund and the Inspector General’s Office of the Workers’ Compensation Board.
William Fedrau, of the Insurance Department’s Frauds Bureau, reported that Pointer, who is unemployed, admitted to investigators that he did not advise the Insurance Fund that his mother died in April 2007. Pointer collected and cashed the checks between April 2007 and August 2008.
Following his arrest, Pointer was released pending a hearing to be scheduled in Rochester City Court. If he is convicted, Pointer could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
