Was Text Messaging to Blame for Train Wreck?

Authorities are looking into whether or not text messaging played a role in last Friday evening's deadly train crash in the Los Angeles area that killed 25 people and injured more than 100.

Federal investigators are reportedly seeking the cell phone records of a pair of teens and the train engineer to see if text messaging was a factor in the crash between a Metrolink commuter train and a freight train that hit head on near Chatsworth. It was the worst U.S. rail disaster in 15 years.

According to a Metrolink spokesperson. a preliminary investigation discovered that "it was a Metrolink engineer that failed to stop at a red signal and that was the probable cause" of the collision with a freight train in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley.

According to a report in the Orange County Register, the engineer of the Metrolink train was chatting via text message with a teenager moments before the crash.

A total of 135 people suffered injuries, with 81 dispatched to hospitals in serious or critical condition.
