An Arizona man was sentenced Monday to two years in prison for filing a false insurance claim. However, that may be the least of his worries.
William Craig Miller, 31, who faces a potential death sentence for murdering five people in Mesa, was sentenced on the insurance fraud charges, which will reportedly allow him more privileges as he awaits the murder trial. Miller had been held in isolation in county jail and reportedly wanted to get transferred to prison where the food is better.
The result of the insurance fraud sentence is that Miller will complete serving a 3½ year sentence for attempted fraudulent schemes Dec. 16, then start serving the latest sentence consecutively.
The fraud charges are the result of the torching of Miller's own house in Scottsdale on Nov. 26, 2005.
Prosecutors argue that Miller then shot and killed Steven Duffy, 30, and his girlfriend, Tammy Lovell, 32, in east Mesa on Feb. 21, 2006, to prevent them from testifying in the arson case. The other three victims were Lovell's children, Cassandra, 15, and Jacob, 10; and Duffy's brother, Shane Duffy, 18.
Miller's arson and murder trial is slated for next May. Prosecutors reportedly will try the arson charges first because they believe that crime led to the slayings.
