Kansas City Police to Pay $750K Following Suit

A traffic stop by Kansas City police officers back in 2006 will cost the department to the tune of $750,000 after a woman lost her baby.

A pair of officers stopped Sofia Salva on Feb. 5, 2006 for reportedly using a false license tag on her car. During the stop, Salva, who was pregnant at the time, informed officers that she needed medical attention.

Dashcam video displayed evidence of the officers stopping Salva for a fake temporary tag. In the video, Salva requests medical attention 21 times. She informed the officers she was pregnant, bleeding and wanted to go to the hospital. Instead, Salva was transported to jail on outstanding warrants. It was not until the following day that she went to a hospital, where she miscarried her baby.

Salva then filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the department, stating that police and jail officers were to blame for her miscarriage by ignoring her requests for help following her arrest.

The officers, Kevin Schnell and Melody Spencer, were fired for not following police procedures during the arrest.
