Thousands of residents in Western Washington have been forced from their homes as a result of flooding.
According to local officials, more than 30,000 people were advised to leave their flood-endangered homes as snowmelt and rain swelled rivers and caused mudslides and avalanches that swamped neighborhoods and roadways.
Flood warnings are in effect today for 14 counties in Western Washington and seven in Eastern Washington, while the National Weather Service issued flood warnings for some two dozen rivers in Western Washington.
A record 2.29 inches of rain fell Wednesday at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, while a record 4.82 inches hit Olympia.
Elsewhere, Tacoma Mayor Bill Baarsma has declared a civil emergency in his city of about 200,000, south of Seattle, mostly as a result of Puyallup River flooding risks to the city's wastewater treatment plant.
