Companies Fined for Indiana Worker Deaths

A trio of companies have been fined nearly $60,000 for their involvement in the deaths of three workers in a construction accident in Indiana during a thunderstorm in June.

The three workers died and two more suffered serious injuries as a wall they were building collapsed on them just off I-65 in Greenwood.

The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration concluded that masonry contractors Cornerstone and Division IV were at fault for violating safety regulations. Each of those companies, based in Brownsburg and with common ownership, was fined $24,300. According to IOSHA, Cornerstone had a prior history of noncompliance with OSHA regulations. The general contractor, Renier Construction, was fined $10,000 for its role in the wall collapse.

Indiana Department of Labor officials say that regulations related to scaffolding, wall bracing, training and safe work zones were not followed -- resulting in 23 violations for each of the masonry companies.

According to IOSHA, Cornerstone also did not pay fines for prior citations. As a result, the state has sued the company to collect the money.
