National Arson Awareness Week Looks to Educate

National Arson Awareness week began Sunday, and firefighters nationwide are targeting toy lighters and youngsters who start fires.

Nationwide, toy-like or novelty lighters have been responsible for numerous injuries, deaths and accidents in recent years, according to reports. The devices — many of which are disguised as toy animals, cell phones, key rings, balls and other colorful items that are attractive to children — are widely considered unsafe in the hands of youngsters.

But juvenile fire-setting is a much bigger problem than just kids playing with novelty lighters. The National Fire Protection Association reports that 300 children will die and 3,000 more will be injured this year alone by juvenile fire-setting.

Roughly three out of every four children experiment with fire and around 80 percent of associated deaths and injuries involve matches or lighters.

Information on home fire safety is available from the National Fire Prevention Association Web site, located at www.nfpa.org. You will find guidelines for installing and maintaining smoke alarms, basic fire escape planning, tips for people living in apartment buildings, tips for older adults, and more.
