In recent years we have seen more and more women becoming visible in the insurance industry but the question still looms as to why women are still less visible in the upper management?
In recent years we have seen more and more women holding positions of leadership in middle management positions as well as corporate board seats. However, we are still finding a void when it comes to women holding the title of chief executive officer. Traditionally, men have dominated the insurance industry, and while women have made great strides to advance in positions of influence in the insurance industry, men are still able to maintain positions where the financial direction of the company is key. It is important that companies look to women for more of an active role in the financial director role of the company as opposed to the support functions of the company.
I remember when I entered the insurance industry I was very green and had no way of knowing what was expected of me or what the job entailed other than adjusting claims. All too often women enter this field with very little guidance and very few role models who are women in the field to look up to. If there were more women in the field with upper management positions, I believe that would allow more women to enter the field and alleviate the contemplation of leaving the industry just after a few years.
While women are making strides constantly, and some of those women have paved the way for me to become more of a voice in the industry, I believe women still have a long way to go before we can call the CEO office ours.

I've been in insurance since 1993 and would agree that there does seem to be very few woman in management positions. It's not clear why. It does seem more men are in this field than women but there does appear to be few women in positions of management in the companies I am familiar with.
