Minnesota Family Wins $8M Settlement

The Minneapolis Golf Club has reportedly agreed to an $8 million settlement with the family of a 6-year-old girl who died as the result of injuries suffered last summer at the facility.

The girl was fatally injured by the suction of a swimming pool drain at the club's facility.

Abigail Taylor died this past March at a Nebraska hospital where she had undergone triple organ transplant surgery. The girl had sat on the drain of a wading pool at the Minneapolis Golf Club, and the drain's suction removed a portion of her intestinal tract.

The settlement surpassed the $6 million limit on the MGC's insurance, so club members had to vote to get a $2 million bank loan to pay the difference, according to a spokesman

Following Taylor's death, her family worked hard in persuading Congress and the Minnesota Legislature to pass safety laws that make it mandatory to have entrapment-proof drain covers for new public pools.
