“The Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS®) certification provides risk practitioners in construction-related industries with the tools necessary to design a solid risk management program for their company,” says Janet Barnes, member of RIMS Board of Directors and risk manager for Snohomish County Public Utility District No.1. “Every industry has unique risks to manage, and RIMS chose to offer this program to its members to give them a competitive edge in the construction sector.”
The core curriculum for CRIS® consists of five courses: Commercial Auto, Surety, CIPs and Miscellaneous Lines; Commercial Liability Insurance for Contractors; Contractual Risk Transfer in Construction; Property Insurance for Contractors; and Workers' Compensation for Contractors. For those new to the construction industry, there is an optional Fundamentals of Construction Risk Management and Insurance course to develop the basic understanding needed to complete the core curriculum. Each lesson can be completed in six to 10 hours and risk practitioners may take them in any order. Courses cost $59; RIMS members receive a 10 percent discount.
“Completing the Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS®) curriculum equips risk managers to more effectively analyze and manage complex construction project risks and their costs,” said Millie Workman, director of training and education for International Risk Management Institute, Inc. (IRMI). “In addition, the specialized knowledge gained through the courses will enhance risk managers’ overall expertise and help them grow professionally.”
This year, RIMS has organized a record-breaking 57 courses and workshops that are estimated to attract more than 700 risk professionals. This fall, more than half of RIMS professional development workshops will offer credit towards the RIMS Fellow® designation, a certification program for risk professionals. To date, there are more than 86 RIMS Fellow® designees and 196 candidates enrolled in the program.
