North Carolina residents elected a new insurance commissioner on Tuesday, giving Democrat Wayne Goodwin the job to replace long-time commissioner Jim Long. Long had served six terms as the state's top insurance executive.
With only 4 percent of the precincts left to count, Goodwin had recorded nearly 52 percent of the vote based on unofficial returns. Republican contender John Odom was in second place with 44 percent of the vote.
Among the challenges awaiting Goodwin will be the issue of preserving the state's plan created to insure coastal property.
