The Saskatchewan Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) recently announced a proposal to reduce its 2009 average premium rate by 1.8 per cent to $1.66.
The 2009 rate proposal was announced at a meeting with representatives of stakeholder groups held in Regina. The proposal was to be presented to employer and industry organizations in a series of consultations in Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert. Feedback from the meetings will be considered by WCB Board Members when final rates are determined in December.
The proposed 2009 rate continues a trend in rate reductions. Since 2004, the WCB's average premium rate has dropped by 19 per cent.
While a proposed rate reduction will be positive news for most employers, WCB CEO Peter Federko says that the elimination of workplace injuries remains the surest way for an employer to manage his or her WCB premium rate.
"The WCB continues to believe that a reduction in work related injuries is the single largest opportunity that stakeholders have to positively impact Saskatchewan workplaces," says Federko. "The WCB is committed to helping employers and their work force improve workplace health and safety through the programs and services of WorkSafe Saskatchewan."
