Karen S. Goppert, 38, of Fulton, was arrested by State Police at Fulton following an investigation by Thomas Hurley Jr. of the Frauds Bureau of the New York State Insurance Department. Goppert was charged with insurance fraud and falsifying business records.
According to Hurley, Goppert told police that jewelry and coins valued at $6,700 were taken from her home when she discovered it had been burglarized on Aug. 27. She then filed an insurance claim for the loss with New York Central Mutual Insurance Company. However, Hurley said an investigation revealed that Goppert had actually sold several pieces of the jewelry prior to reporting the burglary.
Goppert was arraigned in Town of Volney Court and released in her own recognizance pending a hearing. If she is convicted, she could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
