Flood Bill Surfaces in U.S. Senate

With the expiration deadline only months away, a bill to renew the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) moved a step closer to reality on Tuesday in the U.S. Senate. Unless renewed by Congress, the NFIP will cease in September.

The Senate bill calls for renewing the NFIP through 2013. The Senate version would also forgive a massive $17 billion NFIP debt that accumulated through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) handling of Hurricane Katrina.

The 2008 Senate bill would not add wind damage coverage for the NFIP.
