Maine Town Faces Flooding as River Overflows

Recent heavy rains and melting snow forced the St. John River to overflow its banks along the U.S.-Canadian border. The end result is hundreds of people have left the area in Fort Kent, Maine, with two border crossing closed.

The St. John River rose 30 feet and Fort Kent's Main Street is under seven to eight feet of water. Fort Kent is a little over 400 miles north of Boston.

The Fort Kent and Van Buren border crossings that separate the United States and Canada were closed after the 78-year-old steel truss Clair-Fort Kent bridge spanning the St. John River, became submerged.

There have been no reports of injuries to date as a result of the flooding.
